Our Approach
8 Steps We follow to ensure a beautiful pond
1.
Mechanically remove organic material, such as dead leaves and cattails. If left in the water to decompose they turn to muck and create a compost pile at the bottom of the pond which adds to the nutrient load and encourages algae, weeds and cloudy water.
2.
Apply beneficial bacteria. Once in the water, these little guys spring to life and gobble up nutrients in the water column and muck layer, making them less available for algae and weed growth.
3.
Apply diatom stimulator. We love diatoms! They produce up to 50% of the earth’s oxygen and a robust population in your pond will outcompete algae and weeds for nutrients, increase dissolved oxygen and feed zooplankton which feed fish. You will notice that your pond is healthier and your fish are fat and happy!
4.
Provide shade during the heat of summer to reduce weed and algae growth and keep fish more comfortable. This can be accomplished through aquatic plants and occasional use of pond dye.
5.
Apply phosphate binder. This product binds with phosphorus in the water column and the sediment layer making it less available for weed and algae growth.
6.
Sparing and timely use of algaecides and herbicides.
7.
Assess for proper aeration and install systems when needed. Adequate dissolved oxygen is essential to support fish health and beneficial organisms that naturally keep water clean and healthy.
8.
Provide skilled assessment and appropriate treatment on a regular basis. We recommend visits from our trained team every two weeks to assess the pond’s needs, remove debris and apply appropriate products.
